Medicines Management

Shared care and Amber-G guidelines can be found at the following link: http://best.barnsleyccg.nhs.uk/clinical-support/medicines/shared-care-guidelines/  An overview of Shared Care guidelines, including the Principles of Shared Care is available to read here.

Prescribers (including secondary care clinicians) are encouraged to report any problems they experience with shared care or other medicines related issue, particularly where guidelines are not being complied with, to the following email address: BarnsleyAPCReport@nhs.net.

With secondary care opening up activity and undertaking remote consultations, it has been reported that there has been increased pressure in primary care to undertake things they wouldn’t normally.  Due to this, the APC reporting has been temporarily expanded to capture any issues and these can be fed into the APC.  The hospitals need this information so that issues can be addressed.

Practices can now report any interface issues they have, as much as possible, via Barnsley LMC, which will then be submitted to the hospitals.

A list of Prescribing Guidelines is available to view here.

The Barnsley Area Joint Formulary is available to view here.

Medicines Management monthly Newsletters are available to view here.

Workload Shift

Barnsley LMC would like to remind all practices it is important that we receive examples of any workload shift.  Please provide examples of workload shift to barnsley.lmc@nhs.net in order that these can be taken to the meeting with Secondary Care.

We would also request that practices provide examples to Barnsley LMC of any patients who appear to have been waiting for an unreasonable amount of time for follow up appointments from the hospital that may be detrimental to patient care/outcome.

My Planned Care

Below is a link to My Planned Care which gives advice and support while patients wait and helps them to prepare for their hospital consultation, treatment, or surgery. This includes giving information about waiting times at the hospital and other supporting and local services whilst waiting.

This site is updated weekly and can be viewed by anyone, which means patients, their family or carer as well as the NHS team can all see the latest information.

Congratulations to Dr Clare Bannon, Barnsley LMC Medical Secretary

We are pleased to announce that Clare Bannon has been elected to the GPC England Officer Team as deputy chair covering the maternity leave of Farah Jameel. She has been a GP Partner in Barnsley for since 2010, she is the current Chair of the Association of South Yorkshire LMCs (Local Medical Committees) and has been Medical Secretary of Barnsley LMC for four years. In response to this, she said: “I do not underestimate the challenge ahead, General Practice is at breaking point, with intense pressure on GPs across the country to meet the ever-growing demands of the job. I will join the rest of the Officer Team in rebuilding general practice to ensure we meet the needs of our patients and protect the Wellbeing of GPs and their teams”.

Congratulations to Dr Rajeev Gupta

A BARNSLEY Hospital doctor has bagged a prestigious award thanks to his outstanding contribution to healthcare.

Dr Rajeev Gupta, a consultant at Barnsley Hospital, attended the House of Commons earlier this month to collect the innovative healthcare leadership title in the awards organised by the World Book of Records.

The consultant said he was ‘delighted’ to have received the latest in a string of awards gained during his career.

He said: “It’s good to receive recognition for the work I do for healthcare education, public engagement and integration of different disciplines of care.”

A spokesperson for the World Book of Records added: “These awards honour and recognise prominent organisations and personalities for their respected achievements and contribution towards social, economic and corporate fields globally.”

Mailbox for Primary Care to Secondary Care Comminucations – Sheffield Teaching Hospitals

Please see the article below which was forwarded by SYLMC and which has been circulated to Sheffield GPs and Practice Managers in their November LMC newsletter. It provides an email address and information on how GPs can provide feedback and highlight opportunities for learning and improvement to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.

NEW MAILBOX FOR PRIMARY CARE TO SECONDARY CARE COMMUNICATIONS

Article submitted by Sarah Jenkins, Deputy Medical Director,

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (STHFT)

STHFT is piloting a generic email address for Sheffield GP practices to use to direct constructive feedback and highlight opportunities for learning and improvement – sth.lmpagsheffield@nhs.net.

The inbox will be:

  1. Monitored by senior clinicians who will respond or forward the email to relevant STHFT teams as appropriate.
  2. Monitored on a weekly basis, so cannot be used for time sensitive requests, including clinically urgent or active patient pathway information, which should continue to be directed to the appropriate STHFT teams.
  3. Piloted for 4 months, following which it will be evaluated.

The hope is that by providing a simpler, more timely and direct route for feedback and ideas to be shared, we can use this information to make improvements for patients and colleagues.

When sharing feedback via the LMC, patient identifiable data (PID) had to be redacted due to the non-NHS emails used. This will not be an issue if primary care colleagues email from an nhs.net address. Any PID shared will be treated with appropriate confidentiality and respect. Examples of issues that might be shared include:

  • Ideas for new or improved collaboration across primary and secondary care services.
  • Primary care feedback on the appropriateness of STHFT requests for patient care interventions.
  • Positive feedback to STHFT teams to highlight helpful or successful actions, particularly if learning can be extrapolated to other areas to have a positive impact.

Flu Season Under Way – Get Vaccinated

UK Health Security Agency data shows there have been jumps in emergency department flu attendances and hospital admissions in the last week. The intensive care admission rate is now higher for flu than for Covid.

All those eligible for the flu vaccine have been urged to come forward. Flu vaccine uptake in eligible groups is similar to the last couple of years, although there is a particular need for pre-schoolers, pregnant women and those in the health and social care workforces to take up the offer. Click here for more.
